Raghava Magunta is a defendant in the alleged Delhi excise policy fraud. On Friday, the Supreme Court amended the temporary bail granted to him and ordered him to appear in court on June 12. Magunta Srinivasulu Reddy, a member of the YSR Congress Party, is the father of Raghava Magunta.
Raghava Magunta was previously ordered to turn himself in by June 22 after the Delhi High Court on June 7 granted him interim relief for 15 days citing the condition of his maternal grandmother.
A vacation bench of Justices Aniruddha Bose and Rajesh Bindal accepted the Enforcement Directorate’s request for a stay of the Delhi High Court’s decision and stated, “In our opinion, the purpose for which respondent has been released could be served if he asked to surrender on June 12.” As a result, we amend the order to provide that interim bail be granted until June 12 given that he was already granted a larger bond on June 7, 2023.
During the arguments, Additional Solicitor General SV Raju said that it has been common practise for defendants seeking temporary relief to collapse in the lavatory. Reddy used this temporary bail as a ruse to avoid going to jail because the high court would examine his bail request in the final week of July. He previously was unable to obtain assistance for his wife’s illness, and now he is presenting the excuse of a maternal grandma. Senior attorney Amit Desai, representing Raghava, refuted the claims made by the investigating agency by stating that no one is available to take care of his maternal grandmother, who is a patient at Apollo Hospital, and that the ED had double-checked all the information before submitting the report to the high court.
