The appointment of Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court has been officially notified by the Central government. The news was confirmed by Union Minister of State for Law and Justice, Arjun Ram Meghwal, through a tweet this evening.
The appointment comes following the recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium, which proposed Justice Upadhyaya’s name along with six other judges for the position of Chief Justices in seven different High Courts. The Collegium’s recommendation was made on July 5, and the Central government’s subsequent notification marks the final step in formalizing the appointment.[1]
Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya boasts an illustrious legal career. He obtained his graduation degree from Lucknow University in the year 1991 and subsequently enrolled as an advocate in the same year. He honed his legal skills by practicing at the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court. Recognizing his legal acumen and dedication to the profession, he was elevated as an additional judge in 2011. Two years later, in 2013, he was sworn in as a permanent judge.
The appointment to the prestigious position of Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court is a testament to Justice Upadhyaya’s judicial acumen, integrity, and commitment to upholding the principles of justice. As he assumes this crucial role, he will be entrusted with the responsibility of overseeing the administration of justice in one of India’s most prominent High Courts.
