On Tuesday 22th November 2023 the Fourth U.S. The Circuit Court of Appeals said that Maryland cannot be required to make people get a license before they can buy a handgun.
In a 2-1 ruling, Circuit Judge Julius N. Richardson declared that the Maryland law was unconstitutional because it contradicted a significant ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court. According to this ruling, a gun control law cannot be implemented unless the government can demonstrate that it is consistent with the nation’s long-standing customs.
*Governor Wes Moore expressed his disappointment in response to the Fourth Circuit Court’s decision :He clarified that the goal of the law is to guarantee that every Marylander has the freedom to live without fear, not to take away rights from law-abiding gun owners.In order to shield all Marylanders from the gun violence that has been wreaking havoc in our neighborhoods, Governor Wes Moore underlined the significance of sensible gun regulations. He declared that this law is essential to the administration’s commitment to keeping guns away from the wrong people and saving lives, and he was determined to go above and beyond just sending thoughts and prayers Governor Moore reaffirmed that every Marylander has a right to feel secure in their own community and promised to continue advocating for this legislation. The statute under consideration restricts law-abiding adults’ ability to possess handguns, and the state hasn’t provided any historical evidence to support this limitation. It appears that they even acknowledged not being able to locate one. Richardson, it is believed.
The Maryland Firearm Safety Act of 2013 included the regulation stating that a license is required in order to purchase a handgun. Mayor Brandon Scott expressed how disappointed he is with the court’s ruling.
