All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has asked for an extension of at least six months from the 22nd Law Commission for presenting their views on the Uniform Civil Code.
On June 14th, The Law Commission had given a period of 30 days to seek views from the public on the Uniform Civil Code in response to which the Board wrote, “We are not clear how this issue has become so important at this stage keeping in view that the commission’s predecessor has examined the very same issue and reached to the conclusion that UCC is neither necessary nor desirable”.[1]
The Board said, in their letter, that the period is too short considering how vast and important the matter is and no terms of inviting suggestions have been mentioned by the Executive Body in their notice.
Following PM Modi’s remark in his speech that the country cannot work on two different types of laws, experts speculate that, given the 2024 elections and the BJP’s mention of UCC in their 2019 election manifesto, the UCC Bill could be introduced in the Monsoon Lok Sabha Session, which begins on 20th July and will be the first session in the new parliament building.
