The Lawyers’ strike ended after the Advocate Protection Bill was approved in Rajasthan.
On March 16, 2023, the Rajasthan government introduced the Rajasthan Advocates Protection Bill in the state legislative Assembly. This bill aims to protect lawyers from crimes such as assault, bodily harm, force, intimidation, and property damage. The proposed events that led to this bill started on February 18 when Jugraj Chauhan, a 48-year-old lawyer practicing in Jodhpur, was attacked by two men in broad daylight.
Rajasthan became the first State in India to pass a law for the protection of lawyers.
Advocates in the state of Rajasthan have been demanding the passage of “The Advocates Protection Bill, 2023.” This bill has now been passed by the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly.
The assembly passed the Bill last week through a voice vote. Its goal is to prevent acts of assault, criminal force, grievous hurt, and criminal intimidation directed at advocates, as well as damage or loss to their property.
According to Section 3 of the Bill, if an act of assault, grievous hurt, criminal force, or criminal intimidation is committed against an advocate in connection with their duties on court premises, it will be considered an offense under the Act.
Lawyers throughout Rajasthan have been on strike for the past few days, demanding the implementation of the Act. This marks the conclusion of a 33-day-long strike by the lawyer
The Rajasthan government was urged by the Bar Council of India (BCI) to enact a law that would protect lawyers and their families
