France’s legislative council on Friday approved a controversial plan to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64 , after months of mass protests led by President Emmanuel Macron’s leadership led to his political victory after the invasion .
The decision has disappointed or angered critics of the retirement plan . Hundreds of protesters and others gathered in Paris on Friday night before some groups interrupted their march to the historic Place Bastille plaza and beyond , and set fire to them when police fired tear gas or pushed them back with trash cans and scooters .
Protesters threatened new strikes on Saturday , while business organizations and Mr Macron’s political opponents promised to pressure the government to withdraw the bill .
The Constitutional Council reviewed the law in accordance with the constitutional principles laid down in Articles 34 and 47-1 of the French Constitution , which set out the laws on social security financing and the provisions concerning the manner in which such laws are to be enacted . The Commission finds that Macron’s pension reform laws , pursuant to Articles 34 and 47-1 , are constitutionally grounded and that Macron has reason to choose the particular method he deems suitable for modifying , repealing or replacing the old policy with a new one .
The Commission found that Macron used specific methods to change French pension laws , as his intention for pension reform was to ensure the financial balance and stability of France’s pay – as – you – go pension system . Macron , who proposes early retirement to those with long careers or legal disabilities , has also come up with a specific plan for amendment .
The committee approved the pension reform a month after the French Senate passed the bill by a vote of 195 to 112 . Now , after the ratification of the law bridge , the constitution should be staged in the fall . Pension reform will raise France’s mandatory retirement age from 62 to 64 .
Far – right law maker Marine Le Pen has denounced pension reform as ” brutal and unjust ” . In her statement , she said the reforms , if implemented , ” would mark a decisive disconnect between the French people and Emmanuel Macron . “
Opinion polls have consistently shown that a majority of French citizens oppose two more years of work before receiving a pension . The law also requires people to work 43 years to receive a full pension , among other changes to the system .
