"Cow Slaughter Law" Was Misinterpreted; Only Cow Dung Was Recovered From the Location: Allahabad High Court Releases Accused, Claims Insufficient Investigation

The Allahabad High Court recently granted anticipatory bail to a man (Jugadi @ Nizamuddin) who had been charged with violating the UP Cow Slaughter Act. The court made this ruling despite the fact that it found the case against the accused to be an obvious misuse of the law and that the state had not conducted a thorough investigation.

The investigating officer had only gathered a rope and a little amount of cow excrement, the bench of Judge Mohd. Faiz Alam Khan noted that neither the forbidden animal nor its meat had been retrieved from the custody of any accused person or from the scene.

In doing so, the Court released the accused on bail and gave the Uttar Pradesh DGP the go-ahead to remind the investigating officers of their obligation to provide a fair investigation in all criminal cases in general and in cases involving cow slaughter in particular.
