In December 2022, the Maharashtra government decided to set up a Inter- faith marriage -family coordination committee(state level) through a resolution which would primarily take care of women in mixed marriages with no family support. The said resolution appointed Minister of women and children welfare as the head of the  committee.

The PIL was filed by four NGO’s namely People’s union for civil liberties, Citizen for justice, Forum against oppression of women and Indian Muslims for secular democracy. The petitioners submitted that the resolution promoted divide among people on the grounds of religion and encouraged communal disharmony among diverse religious sects.

It further violates article 14,15,19 and 21 of the Indian constitution. Using women protection as a paradigm it intends to take away a woman’s agency on her decision to marry.

Therefor the Bombay high Court has directed the State to file a response within two-week period time to the petition challenging the set up the committee.
