A child suffering from diabetes in the Murukkumpuzha village of Kerala was being denied health insurance. On Thursday, the mother of the child filed a petition in the Kerala High Court against the same.

The mother mentions in the petition how a certain company refused to provide them with family insurance when her husband was a cancer patient and her son was a diabetic. The company’s reason for the same was stated that insurance was available only for adults of or above the age of 18 and not juveniles. Public sector insurance companies too have the same excuse.

The mother also talks about diabetes being an auto-immune disease for which no human is at fault. Her child has type 1 diabetes, a lifelong condition for which they face both physical and mental health challenges.

The government had introduced the scheme called the Mittayi project for such children but, unfortunately, hundreds of children cannot access it for not being of age 18 or above. This type of discrimination against the needy children hampers their education and their whole future.

While writing for her own child, the mother also becomes a voice for everyone facing such issues. She has written not just a petition for the court but also to the Social Justice Principal Secretary and the Chief Minister of Kerala as well.
