The presence of oil, gas and coal industry is being criticized by several activists, who staged small protests at the COP28 at the UN climate summit. A ban to the use of fossil fuels, which is considered as the major source of climate change was also requested.

In the host country United Arab Emirates, the protests have been muted to some extent limiting the freedom of expression, in contrast to the protests staged 2021’s COP26 in Glasgow and 2015’s COP21 in Paris.

It was reported that there has been no protest outside the site till now, and that the protests are being pre-approved and then allowed by the UN and UAE.

A Zimbabwean activist raised hi voice against the use of fossil fuels asking for a total end to its use either abated or unabated.

During the COP26, it was agreed by the governments to phase down the use of unabated coal, but this year countries remains uncertain about what role is to be played by fossil fuel in the future.

The host country UAE’s decision in representing Sultan Al Jaber, CEO of state oil firm ADNOC, as the president of COP28 is raising a lot of criticism.

It was stated by Jaber that oil and gas companies will also be included in the summit and would be a part of discussions on tackling climate change.
