Argentina is a country in the southern half of South America with a population of 4.58 crores in 2021. When Argentina’s name comes people think about football and Lionel Messi (Argentine footballer) but this time the country’s name comes to light because of its Presidential election. Javier Melei, a TV celebrity turned politician won the presidential election in Argentina and defeated Sergio Massa. Javier Melei Secured 56% of votes out of 99% of total votes. He is going to take oath on the 10th of December 2023. During his campaign, he mentioned that he would remove most of the government ministries like the Cultural Ministry, Environment Ministry, Sports Ministry, etc. to cut down unwanted expenditures of the government. He further mentioned that he would remove the country’s Central Bank and introduce the dollar as a currency of exchange. Argentina has been suffering from high inflation rate for years and the use of the dollar could save people from going into poverty. Javier Melei accused China of campaigning against him on YouTube and supporting his opposition. So, he said that he would not keep any business relations with a communist country. The leaders from Brazil, the US, and X owner (Elon Musk) have congratulated Javier Melei for his presidential winning.
Javier Melei, who won the election with the support of the USA has shown no interest in joining BRICS extension as they see no gain in it. Argentina’s previous government has shown interest in joining the global emerging economy group i.e., BRICS and they are going to become members from the 1st of January 2024. Javier’s Foreign Policy advisor, Diana Mondino said to Russian News Sputnik, that Argentina is not going to proceed to join BRICS blogs as they don’t see any interest in it. He further mentions that Argentina will join in the future if the bloc sees relevancy to Argentina’s economy.
