The Supreme Court of India recently proclaimed that it will issue directions related to the recent Manipur violence to rebuild faith in the process of rule of law.
The Apex Court also declared that it will constitute a committee consisting of three former High Court judges to delve deeply into the matters concerning the incident in a broad manner and understand what can be done in terms of providing relief , rehabilitation of the population and restoration of living spaces.
The Committee is said to be headed by Justice Gita Mittal ( Former Chief Justice of J&K High Court ) and consists of Justice Asha Menon ( former Delhi High Court Judge) and Justice Shalini Phansalkar Joshi ( former Bombay High Court Judge)
Regarding the investigation to be done , the Apex Court has allowed the transfer of 11 FIRs related to cases of sexual violence to the Central Bureau of Investigation and has also appointed five officers from other states to handle the matter in an objective manner.
The Court has also appointed Mr. Dattatray Padsalgikar IPS who served as Mahrashtra DGP and Mumbai Police Commissioner as the overseeing officer of the CBI investigation.
Regarding the State Police investigation , the Court noted the statement from the state authorities that it will form 42 SITs to look into cases which are not
handled by the CBI and held that the it will include police officials from other states as well as the supervision of 6 DIG rank officers.
