The Calcutta High Court has ordered a DIG-level investigation into the allegation that a candidate filed his nomination papers for the West Bengal Panchayat Elections 2023 while he was abroad. The court has directed the DIG, Crime Investigation Department, West Bengal, to investigate the matter under the supervision of a retired judge of the court.

The allegation was made by a local resident, who filed a petition in the high court alleging that Mohinuddin Gazi, a candidate from Minakha block in North Dinajpur district, filed his nomination papers while he was in Dubai. The petitioner said that Gazi had submitted a false affidavit to the returning officer, stating that he was present in India at the time of filing his nomination papers.

The high court has directed the DIG to investigate the matter and submit a report within two weeks. The court has also asked the State Election Commission to file a report on the steps it has taken to verify the authenticity of the nomination papers filed by the candidates.

This is the second time that the Calcutta High Court has ordered an investigation into allegations of irregularities in the West Bengal Panchayat Elections 2023. In a previous order, the court had directed the CBI to probe allegations of tampering with nomination papers and misrepresentation of information by returning officers.

The West Bengal Panchayat Elections 2023 were held in four phases on July 3, 7, 11, and 14. The results of the elections were declared on July 19.
