About the Organizer

St. Joseph’s College of Law is approved by the Bar Council of India (BCI), New Delhi and affiliated to Karnataka State Law University, Hubbali. St. Joseph’s College of Law has forayed into the area of imparting legal education in the academic year 2017-2018. It is the first ever Jesuit Law College in South Asia.

The institution is driven by the ideology of faith and labour that is resonated in the motto of the college “FIDE ET LABORE.” The members of the Bangalore Jesuit Society started the Institution as they strongly felt that imparting legal education is necessary as it equips a citizen with techniques, skills, competences, basic philosophies, ideologies, critiques, and instrumentalities all addressed to the creation and maintenance of a just society.

At St. Joseph’s College of Law, they are driven with the vision to produce competent, ethically sound lawyers who are committed to the cause of transforming the society.

About the Conference

Environmental paradigms have shaped the way we look at the complexities of comparative climate constitutionalism in theory and praxis. Communities are forced to resettle without compensation while traditional knowledge is capitalized through intellectual property frameworks.

Rampant developmental activities also lead to destruction and displacement of support systems, local populations and animals. These specificities of ecological disturbance can lead to concerns on policy and growth. Are we missing the big picture by getting lost in the granular details of environmental conservation? In essence, we are missing the forest for the trees.

Judicial activism has played a key role in preserving environmental governance and rule of law. To this end, the institutions and agencies designed to preserve and protect the environment have enlarged their powers to engage in merits review alongwith judicial review to check the balance of commerce and community.

Technology has also aided in addressing supply chain bottlenecks through artificial intelligence tools and blockchain products to connect the farmer and the farm using cloud and beyond. Geo-tagging of endangered and at-risk animals has considerably reduced man-animal conflict as private properties continue to expand in small cities.

While work from home possibilities have increased, pollution continues unabated as the gig economy and platforms make their way to deliver goods and services to consumers on fast-track mode. With increasing disposable income and purchasing power, environmental patience has negated its role and importance with an ever-growing young generation wanting better lifestyle measures.

With such alarming differences arising from legal and economic lenses, the scope and ambit of environment across space and time demands a rigorous investigation. The trends in disruption and displacement of vulnerable and marginalised populations without access to remedy remains a central concern in the area of law and development.

The social implications of attitudes to displacement causes disenchantment even if it benefits the local economy, thereby causing output risk and progressive instability. At the same time, environmental exploitation within and between provincial states has disadvantaged certain social subgroups and occupations, particularly with low skill levels.

Environment to this end, has been a perennial problem of advancing societies and remains a challenge for public policy professionals. Through this national conference, we want the research direction in environment studies to be anchored in epistemological, ontological and methodological frameworks that ask the hard questions.
