During a virtual G20 Leaders’ Summit hosted by India, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau emphasized the importance of coordinated leadership and action among G20 nations to uphold the rule of law and strengthen global systems. This comes after allegations made by Trudeau in September of the involvement of Indian agents in the payoff of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia.
The virtual summit was an opportunity for G20 leaders to continue their efforts as outlined in the G20 New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration agreed upon in September. During the summit, Trudeau highlighted the importance of coordinated leadership and action to uphold the rule of law, strengthen global systems, and advance issues such as fiscal institution reform, gender equality, and digital technology.
He also stressed the significance of supporting and reforming multinational development banks to help low and low-middle-income countries access the support they need. Trudeau condemned Russia’s actions in Ukraine and called for them to be held accountable, noting that the most vulnerable are affected most by the war’s global impacts.
He reiterated his condemnation of Hamas and its attacks against Israel, and recognized progress made in the release of hostages and the extended humanitarian pause in Gaza.
At the summit, Trudeau and other leaders discussed the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza and the need to ensure civilians have access to life-saving aid. He condemned the rise in Islamophobia, anti-Semitism, and anti-Arab sentiment. Finally, he reaffirmed the importance of the G20 as a forum for international cooperation and constructive engagement.
Prime Minister Trudeau stressed the need to cover civilians in Gaza and insure
disencumbered access to life- saving philanthropic aid. The Prime Minister condemned the disturbing rise in Islamophobia, antisemitism, and anti-Arab demarcation, ” it said. Prime Minister Trudeau reaffirmed the significance of the G20 as a forum for transnational collaboration and a space to engage constructively when issues arise, it added.
