Youth in India ape Western culture, spoil life due to lure of free relations with opposite sex: Allahabad High Court

Spread the love

The case of Jai Govind v State heard in the Allahabad High Court sheds light on the concerns raised by the judiciary regarding the impact of imitating Western culture on the youth in India. The Court expressed its apprehension about how the youth are influenced by social media, movies, TV serials, and web series, leading them to adopt certain aspects of Western culture, including indulging in casual and free relationships.

The Court observed that this trend has led to negative consequences, including an increase in cases involving false promises of marriage, rape, suicide, murder, and false implications during relationships. The case in question involved a woman who had multiple affairs before she died by suicide, seemingly frustrated by the conflicts arising from her relationships. The judiciary noted that Indian society is grappling with the dilemma of whether to allow young children to embrace Western norms or to adhere firmly to Indian cultural values. Families often struggle to accept their children’s choice of life partners due to issues related to caste, religion, and financial status.

The Court also highlighted the rol” of social media and movies in portraying multiple affairs and infidelity as normal, which may influence impressionable minds to experiment with similar behaviors, despite these actions not fitting within prevailing societal norms. In this specific case, the bail applicant was accused of abetting the suicide of the deceased woman, with allegations of kidnapping and rape against him and other co-accused. The Court considered the complex dynamics of the relationships involved, acknowledging that the deceased woman was involved with both the bail applicant and another boy, which may have contributed to her distress and frustration.

Ultimately, the Court granted bail to the applicant and directed the lower court to expedite the trial process and ideally conclude it within two years.

It’s essential to recognize that this case represents a specific legal instance and the Court’s reflections on certain societal issues. The matter of balancing cultural values and the influence of Western culture on the youth remains a broader social debate in India.
