On Friday, the Supreme Court decided to list the petitions from the Central Bureau of Investigation challenging the bail that Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) Chief Lalu Prasad Yadav was given in the Fodder Scam Cases on August 25 by the Jharkhand High Court.

In an appearance on behalf of the CBI, Additional Solicitor General SV Raju asked the bench, which also included Justices Sanjay Karol and Manoj Misra and was chaired by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, for an early listing of the case today.

Background Given that he had already completed half of his sentence, the Jharkhand High Court granted release in the case involving the illicit withdrawal of Rs 3.13 crore from the Dumka Treasury on April 17, 2021. He was found guilty in four incidents involving fraudulent money withdrawals from the Jharkhand treasuries in Deoghar, Dumka, and Chaibasa. He was given bail in the Deoghar Treasury case in 2019. For making unauthorized withdrawals from the Chaibasa Treasury, he was found guilty in two cases. On October 9, 2020, the Jharkhand High Court granted him bail in the Chaibasa Treasury case on the grounds that he had already served half of the term that had been given to him.

Following his conviction in three counts involving a fodder fraud, Prasad was imprisoned as of December 23, 2017. In the four instances involving the Dumka, Deoghar, and Chaibasa treasuries, he was granted bail.

The RJD leader was also found guilty in a fifth fodder scam case involving the illicit withdrawal of Rs. 139.35 crores from the Doranda Treasury in February of this year and given a sentence of five years in prison and a fine of Rs. 60 lakhs by a Special Court in Ranchi. The Jharkhand High Court granted him bail in connection with the fifth case in April of this year.
