Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud stated on Tuesday that one of the goals of the Collegium is to make sure that the richness and diversity of India are represented because the Supreme Court is a people-centric court and is not polyvocal.
He said that one way to improve the administration of justice is to promote competent judges to the Supreme Court, especially those who have devoted years of their lives and decades to serving the judiciary. He was speaking at a ceremony held by the Supreme Court Bar Association to honor judges Ujjal Bhuyan and SVN Bhatti.
“This is not the Delhi or the Maharashtra Supreme Courts. It is the Supreme Court of India, and our goal is to demonstrate how representative this court is of India’s diversity. To guarantee that we portray the diversity and richness of India, I think this has been one of the Collegium’s goals.
The Supreme Court has drawn criticism for having several voices. But let’s consider the alternative. We have multiple judges since there are no two judges who are exactly alike. In this case, a judge from Maharashtra is sitting on the same bench as a judge from West Bengal to deliberate a Haryana case. The Supreme Court of India is best understood in this regard. The Supreme Court is a people-centric court, not a polyvocal one, the CJI stated.
Each Supreme Court justice, according to him, brings their own special legal knowledge and expertise to bear while deciding legal questions.
“People won’t begin to trust the judiciary until they perceive a reflection of themselves in those who administer justice. We need to keep acting as mirrors for our own cultures.
“It is our duty to see that qualified individuals are appointed to the Supreme Court from the Bar and the Bench. The Supreme Court will surely benefit much from the promotion of Justices Bhuyan and Bhatti, according to the CJI.
R Venkataramani, India’s attorney general, and Adish A. Aggarwala, the president of the SCBA, both spoke at the event.
Justice Bhuyan, who was born on August 2, 1964, was the senior-most judge on the high court that served as his father, the Gauhati High Court when he was appointed as a judge on October 17, 2011.
Beginning on June 28, 2022, and ending on July 12, this year, he presided as the Telangana High Court’s chief justice.
Born on May 6, 1962, Justice Bhatti was the senior-most judge in his parent high court when he was nominated to the High Court of Andhra Pradesh on April 12, 2013.
