The Bombay High Court has today asked the Maharashtra government to provide details of the appointment of the Child Abuse Inspector (CMPO) in the state.

The court asked the state to provide details on how many officers it has hired and whether it has taken any action, if any, related to the failure, even if they send regular updates on child marriages that it prohibits.

Public procecutor PP Kakade informed the court today that the PCMA rules were framed and served on October 21, 2022.  The Judge noted that these rules play an important role in the prevention of child marriage .The court said that the CMPO also has the power to process complaints about child marriages that come to it. Any person, organization or institution may report a case of child marriage where there is  reason to believe that the marriage has taken place. The CMPO has additional powers to investigate, record statements and gather evidence following a complaint.
