The appointment of MS Ramachandra Rao as the chief justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court was made public Friday by the Central Government. As from January this year after the retirement of Chief Justice Amjad Sayed, a vacancy has arisen in the post of chief justice at the Himachal High Court.

Last month, the Supreme Court Collegium, led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, put forth the recommendation for the elevation of Justice Rao. The rationale behind this recommendation was that the Telangana High Court, where Justice Rao originates from, currently lacks representation among the Chief Justices of the High Courts[1].

On June 29, 2012, Justice M S Ramachandra Rao became a High Court judge in the state of Andhra Pradesh. He has chosen Telangana as his parent High Court for bifurcation of the State of Andhra Pradesh.

On October 12, 2021 he was transferred to be a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, where he presently sits.
