New Delhi, July 4, 2023 – In the wake of escalating violence between the Kuki and Meitei communities in Manipur, the Supreme Court has demanded an updated status report from the state government. The court’s decision came after the Manipur government claimed that the situation was gradually improving in the troubled north-eastern state.[1]

A bench led by Chief Justice of India, D.Y. Chandrachud, took up the application filed by the Manipur Tribunal Forum, a non-governmental organization, which requested the deployment of the army in tribal areas to restore peace and control the conflict.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the state government, informed the court that while progress was being made, it was happening at a slow pace. He stated, “CAPF companies have been deployed, and the curfew has been reduced to five hours. There is an improvement.”

However, senior advocate Colin Gonsalves countered the state government’s claims, arguing that several leaders of militant groups were openly threatening to annihilate the Kuki community. This highlights the continued volatility and deep-rooted tensions present in Manipur.

The Supreme Court’s directive for an updated status report demonstrates its concern and commitment to ensuring the restoration of peace in Manipur. The court is closely monitoring the situation and expects a comprehensive report from the state government, detailing the progress made in quelling the violence and protecting the affected communities.

The clashes between the Kuki and Meitei communities have resulted in numerous casualties and displacement, causing widespread fear and distress among the residents. Efforts to mediate and find a resolution to the longstanding conflict have so far proven challenging.

The Supreme Court’s involvement in this matter underscores the gravity of the situation and the need for immediate action. The court’s decision to seek an updated report reflects its dedication to ensuring the safety and well-being of the people affected by the violence.

As Manipur grapples with this wave of violence, it is crucial for all stakeholders to come together and prioritize peacebuilding efforts. The state government, along with security forces, must work collaboratively to implement effective measures that will restore harmony and protect the rights of all communities.

The Supreme Court will continue to monitor the developments closely and take appropriate action based on the updated status report from the Manipur government. The court’s intervention in this matter demonstrates its unwavering commitment to upholding justice and preserving peace in the region.
