In a clear jab at China, S Jaishankar, the minister of external affairs, stated on Thursday that the SCO i.e., Shanghai Cooperation Organisation ought to cooperate to advance prosperity and stability within the area by closely upholding the fundamentals of international law, honouring each other’s sovereignty and integrity of territory, alongside fostering cooperation in the economy.
While addressing the 22nd meeting of the SCO Council of Heads of the Government in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, the EAM made these statements.
China is making billion-dollar investments in Pakistan’s CPEC i.e., China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. India has voiced opposition to the projects being implemented in Pakistan that are being built through Kashmir, which is occupied by Pakistan. In order to enhance business in the region, strong connections and adequate infrastructure are essential.
China, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, and lastly Uzbekistan are at present members of SCO alliance.
The constant flow of individuals, ideas, and goods through the area has had a lasting impact on our language, traditions, customs, cultural norms, and food. Now, these ties from the past ought to provide a model for further cooperation on economic aspects, stated Jaishankar.
The Global South ought not to be bearing the burden of unprofitable debt via opaque projects. The minister went on to say that the INSTC i.e., the International North South Transport Corridor, and the IMEC i.e., the India Middle East Europe Economic Corridor would help to promote prosperity.
The leaders of the alliance of countries such as France, India, Italy, United Arab Emirates, US, Saudi Arabia, Germany, and the European Union together declared the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor alongside the G20 summit in the month of September. The initiative is widely viewed as a rival to the Belt and Road Initiative launched by China.
A 7,200 kilometre multifaceted network of road, rail, and ship links connecting countries such as Azerbaijan, Central Asia, Europe, India, Iran and Russia is known as the International North-South Transport Corridor.
Over the past ten years, Beijing has been many countries’ preferred lender. Numerous countries have extensively borrowed from China. International concerns were voiced about debt traps and China’s potential to use its massive BRI i.e., Belt and Road infrastructure initiatives to impose dominance over the region.
The BRI was sharply criticized by the US under the prior administration of Donald Trump, which believed that China’s financing with an intention of predation was pushing smaller nations towards enormous financial debts and liabilities that threatened their right to sovereignty.
