If you are also not a fan of ‘big fat weddings’ with ‘big fat expenses’ then here is the bill introduced in the Lok Sabha.
House of People MP Jasbir Singh Gill on Friday introduced a private member’s bill aimed at preventing “unnecessary expenditure” on social occasions such as weddings and festivals.
A new bill in the Lok Sabha seeks to limit the number of guests to be invited to weddings. Aims for a maximum of 100 guests and 10 meals per wedding.
The Congress Party MP said that the proposed bill titled “Prevention of Wasteful Expenditure on Special Occasions Bill” 2020 is up for discussion in Parliament, it will bring positive changes in the lives of the underprivileged and ultimately help reduce female feticide – the killing of the baby girl in the womb.
The bill also proposes to limit donations or auspicious offers on the occasion to just ₹2,500.
His aim is to end the culture of extravagant Indian weddings.
However, this is not the first time such a proposal has been presented in parliament. Similar bills have been proposed in the past that sought to check the “display of wealth” at weddings.
Account for private members
Every Friday, “Private Members” Bills are presented in the Lok Sabha. Any member of parliament who is not a minister is called a private member. Elected representatives of various political parties thus have the opportunity to present draft laws in matters of public interest and legislative importance.
