Haryana Violence: government form committee to monitor the social media platform

The Haryana government has taken steps to prevent the spread of provocative content on social media platforms in order to maintain law and order and communal harmony in the state.

Following the recent communal violence in Nuh, the government has formed a committee to monitor social media and coordinate with relevant agencies to take corrective action. The committee will be chaired by the Special Secretary, Home -I, and will include a superintendent of police, CID, Haryana, deputy secretary, Information Technology, and an interception assistant from the office of the ACS, Home Department. The committee will work to prevent the circulation of videos, photographs, and hate speeches that could incite violence or promote communal tensions. The recent clashes in Nuh, which resulted in the deaths of six people, including two home guards and a cleric, were triggered by an attempt to stop a Vishva Hindu Parishad procession and spread to Gurugram over the course of several days.

Recent violence erupted in Nuh and Gurugram districts in Haryana as mobs attempted to stop a religious procession organized by the Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad. The procession, consisting of around 200 people, was allegedly pelted with rocks by a large crowd as it walked down the main road in Nuh town. The Hindu side initially fled but later regrouped and retaliated, leading to violent clashes that resulted in the deaths of two home guards and injuries to over 200 people, including police officers. A video featuring Monu Manesar, a Bajrang Dal member and cow vigilante who had been booked for the murder of two Muslim men in February, began circulating on social media prior to the procession, triggering rumors that he would be participating. However, Manesar denied participating in the procession, and the violence was reportedly caused by a combination of social media rumors, provocative slogans, and attacks on passersby. The violence also spread to Sohna in Gurugram, where mobs pelted stones and set vehicles and shops on fire.
