Gujarat High Court’s Order: No Law College Admissions by Gujarat University until June 28
The Gujarat High Court has issued a directive to Gujarat University, stating that they should not assign any students to any law colleges affiliated with the university until June 28. This decision came in response to a petition filed by a law college, which claimed that the Bar Council of India (BCI) had de-recognized grant-in-aid institutions associated with Gujarat University without conducting necessary inspections.
The petitioner law college stated that they had been submitting payments for inspections to the BCI every year, but inspections were not being conducted. The issue arose in 2008 when new Rules on Standards of Legal Education and Recognition of Degrees were introduced, requiring one professor for every sixty students. The petitioners argued that while the State government considered one class to have 120 students, the BCI considered one class to have 60 students, causing a discrepancy.
The petitioner also highlighted the difference in fees between grant-in-aid colleges (₹1,700) and self-financed colleges, emphasizing that if the former were de-recognized, students who couldn’t afford higher fees would suffer.
The Court granted permission to include the State Education Department and the Department of Law as respondents in the case. The Advocate General appeared on behalf of the State government and was requested by the judge to take a non-adversarial approach and find a solution to the issue. The case is scheduled for further hearing on June 28.
To prevent students from opting for self-financed institutions during this period, the common allotment process was put on hold until the next hearing.
