Arvind Kejriwal, the chief minister of Delhi, and Sanjay Singh, a member of parliament, have been ordered by a Gujarat court to appear before the court on July 13 due to the criminal defamation case Gujarat University filed over their remarks about PM Narendra Modi’s degree.

The court instructed the Aam Aadmi Party leaders on Wednesday after observing that, on the surface, a case against them appeared to exist under Section 500 (defamation) of the Indian Penal Code.

The lawyers representing Kejriwal and Singh appeared in court on their behalf and filed applications to exclude both of them from appearing and from providing documents in connection with the lawsuit.

After the Gujarat high court in March overturned the chief information commissioner’s decision requesting the institution to divulge details on Modi’s degree, a defamation suit was brought over Kejriwal and Singh’s remarks. The high court fined Kejriwal, who requested the information, 25,000.[1]

At press appearances and on Twitter, Singh and Kejriwal are said to have made “defamatory” remarks against the institution in reference to Modi’s degree.
