Context
In the year 2020, the ICC released a draft policy that would have allowed transgender women to compete in women’s cricket without any restrictions, however after receiving feedback from the stakeholder, ICC decides to revise the policy.
The revised policy says that the transgender women will only be allowed to play if they certain criteria which includes the hormone therapy for at least 2 years. The testosterone level should also be below a certain threshold. Any transgender women who wish to compete in women’s cricket must for special suspicions which would be passed them by the ICC.
The new policy was also criticized and said to be discriminatory. Women should be allowed to play and to compete in women’s cricket without any restrictions. They argued that ICC is based on outdated science and it does not take into the account the individual circumstances of transgender athletes.
The ICC has defended the discriminatory comments that it is totally relevant from their side because the new policy is necessary to protect the integrity of women. The policy revision is based on the scientific evidence that shoes that transgender women have a physical advantage over cisgender women and the ICC’s decision is fair to all the athletes.
The future for Transgender women as an athlete is still unclear. ICC has also stated that the policy is open for reviewing further it also stated that is possible that the policy might stay intact for many years to come.
