On Wednesday, the Chief Justice of India (CJI), DY Chandrachud, stated that four special benches dealing with the matters of criminal appeal, land acquisition matters, motor accident claims tribunal cases, and direct and indirect tax will sit in the Supreme Court from next week.

The Chief Justice also stated that the bench dealing with land acquisition matters will be headed by Justice Surya Kant. However, the exact composition of the benches is still unknown at this time.

On Tuesday, concerning direct and indirect taxes, the Chief Justice of India stated that a special bench would be established.

“There will be a special bench from next week onward on Wednesdays and Thursdays to deal with direct and indirect tax matters only,” said the CJI.

Last year, Justice Chandrachud applauded V. Lakshmikumaran, founding partner of tax law firm Lakshmikumaran & Sridharan, for recommending that the formation of a tax bench would be beneficial in the long run towards lowering the number of tax cases pending before the Supreme Court.

Justice Chandrachud, who at that time was the third-senior most judge, stated, “That is an excellent suggestion. I will mention it to the hon’ble CJI today.” Justice NV Ramana was holding the office of Chief Justice at that time.
