ABSTRACT

The Bhopal gas tragedy, which occurred on the night of December 2-3, 1984, in Bhopal, India, is considered one of the most catastrophic industrial disasters in history. It involved the release of a highly toxic gas, methyl isocyanate (MIC), from a pesticide plant owned by Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL).

The incident resulted in the immediate deaths of thousands of people and caused severe injuries and long-term health complications for countless others. The exact number of casualties is still a matter of debate due to the lack of accurate records and the ongoing impact on the affected population. The gas leak affected nearby communities, primarily comprising marginalized and economically disadvantaged individuals.

On the night around 1:00 a.m. of the incident, a significant amount of water entered a storage tank containing MIC, leading to a runaway reaction and the release of a massive cloud of toxic gas into the surrounding areas. The gas quickly spread through the densely populated neighborhoods, affecting thousands of people who were exposed to its deadly effects. The immediate impact was catastrophic, resulting in the loss of thousands of lives and causing injuries and health complications for countless others.
