Arjun Ram Meghwal appointed as new minister of Law and Justice

In addition to his current portfolio, the President of India Draupadi Murmu announced on May 18th that Arjun Ram Meghwal would be given an independent post as state minister for law and justice. A portfolio in the Ministry of Land, Nature and Science has been given to Kiren Rijiju, who served as Justice Minister.

Arjun Ram Meghwal, aged 69, currently holds the position of Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and Minister of State for Culture. Prior to his political career, he served as an Indian Administrative Services (IAS) officer and held the role of District Magistrate (Collector) in Rajasthan[1].  In the first term of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Meghwal had been a minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Water Resources, Ganga Rejuvenation and River Development. For more than a decade, he was a member of the Bharatiya Janta Party.

Meghwal was elected in 2009 as MP from Bikaner to the Lok Sabha, where he won re election in 2014 general elections. He was BJP’s Chief Whip in the Lok Sabha for his second term as a Member of Parliament[2].

Additionally, it is noteworthy that Meghwal, who is now leading the Law Ministry, has not previously occupied a position at the cabinet rank.
