The Punjab administration came under fire on Monday from the National Green Tribunal (NGT) for pollution and an increase in stubble-burning incidents. The state government came under fire from the NGT for defying the Supreme Court’s directive to outlaw stubble burning immediately.

The Green Tribunal voiced its displeasure with the Punjab government’s actions for failing to regulate stubble burning.

Punjab’s handling of the whole matter, according to the NGT, was “very cosmetic”. It criticized the lack of action taken by the state and its pollution control body. The Punjab government was questioned by the tribunal over its system for identifying farmers who engage in stubble burning.

“Do you at least have area-wise crop management?” the panel questioned. If some of your stubble burns, how will you respond? Have you located the plot’s owner?

“We can identify the exact location of the fire using Isro-satellite images. However, how can one proceed?” it continued.

How did you spend the past twenty-four hours? Every minute matters. That air is what we breathe,” it declared. Real-time satellite pictures, according to the NGT, showed active agricultural fire occurrences across the nation starting at 10 am. A substantial number of these incidents were in Punjab since the whole state was displayed in red on the map.

“These orders are of no meaning, as they have been going on for so many days and there has been no result,” the bench declared in response to the State Pollution Control Committee member secretary’s explanation of the actions being done and the directives being issued by the state.
